How does it work?
Otovent is a medical device that can be used if you are unable to equalise the pressure yourself. For best results, follow the three steps below. Before using it for the first time, stretch the Otovent balloon out slightly and inflate it once.
Attach
Attach the balloon to the nose piece. Hold the round part of the nose piece firmly against one nostril. Press your index finger against the other nostril to block the airflow on that side.
Inflate
Take a deep breath, close your mouth and blow up the balloon gently but firmly until it is the size of a grapefruit (10–12 cm). Once the balloon is inflated, swallow 1 to 3 times.
Repeat
Repeat this process with the other nostril. The procedure is successful when you hear or feel a small ‘pop’ in your ear.

How can Otovent® help?
Otovent is a medication-free, non-surgical device for self-inflation. The balloons in the kit are specially designed to open the Eustachian tube under pressure when inflated through the nose. This process allows the fluid associated with glue ear infection to drain away safely. Based on clinical trials involving children diagnosed with glue ear blockage, NICE recommends trying auto-inflation during the watch-and-wait or active observation period.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Otovent help with earache when flying?
Otovent can be used to equalise the pressure in the middle ear before and after a flight. It can also be used during the flight if you experience changes in ear pressure.
Can I use Otovent as an adult, or is it only for children?
Both adults and children aged 3 and over can use Otovent safely. Children must always be supervised by an adult during treatment.
Is Otovent safe, and are there any side effects?
Otovent is safe to use. Possible side effects include temporary earache, headache, dizziness or a nosebleed.
How often and for how long should I use Otovent?
During the first week of treatment, Otovent® should be used at least three times a day (morning, afternoon, evening), with one puff into each nostril on each occasion. After one week, Otovent® should be used at least twice a day (morning and evening). Treatment may last longer than one month, and it may take several months to achieve the maximum clinical effect. Consult your healthcare professional after 2–3 weeks to decide whether treatment should be continued.
To relieve symptoms following flying, diving or when there is negative pressure in the ear: when used in connection with air travel, Otovent is recommended from the start of the descent, with 3–4 inflations. If the symptoms persist, treatment may be continued after landing.
Otovent can be used several times before or after diving, or during and after hyperbaric oxygen therapy, to relieve symptoms.
How do I know if I am using Otovent correctly?
It may take a few attempts before you get used to it and feel comfortable with how to use it and the technique involved. When used correctly, the user will hear sounds – clicks or crackles – in their ear.
Some patients may experience an unpleasant sensation in the ear during inflation. This strange feeling will diminish during the next inflation and is an indication that the treatment is working properly.
