Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my ears start to hurt when I’m diving?

The moment you dive, the pressure and weight of the water cause the eardrum to be pushed inwards. You will notice this change as a feeling of pressure or, at times, as pain caused by the nerves in the eardrum. When you equalise, the Eustachian tube opens, allowing pressure differences to be equalised again. When there are greater pressure differences, such as when diving, equalising can become more difficult.

Otovent is suitable and safe for both novice and experienced divers as a tool to prevent ear pressure problems and practise equalisation. It is particularly useful before and after diving to reduce negative pressure.

It may take a few tries before you get used to it and feel comfortable using the product and the technique. It’s helpful if an adult can try out Otovent first and then tell the child what it feels like. When used correctly, the user should hear clicking or crackling sounds in their ear.

Some divers may experience an unpleasant sensation in their ears whilst equalising. This initial sensation will subside during the next equalisation and is a sign that the procedure is working properly.

Yes, Otovent is a safe and clinically proven method. It is important that treatment in children is always carried out under the supervision of an adult. It is also recommended that an adult tries out Otovent themselves first, before the child begins treatment.

Diving whilst suffering from earache is not recommended, as pressure differences underwater can exacerbate existing ear problems and may even lead to barotrauma. If your ears are already hurting, you are often unable to equalise the pressure properly, which increases the risk of damage.

You shouldn’t go diving if you have a cold. A cold can cause your mucous membranes to swell. This often makes it difficult to equalise properly. The message is simple: stop and don’t dive. If you try to equalise forcefully anyway, you could damage your inner ear. Sometimes this can be treated with surgery, but it can also lead to permanent hearing loss.
