Does your child suffer from a feeling of fullness in the ear, hearing that sometimes fluctuates between good and not so good, or mild earache? These symptoms may be indicative of earwax blockage. In that case, it’s a good idea to try Otovent first, as in many cases this can help prevent the need for ear tubes!

Otovent is a safe, medication-free way to relieve middle ear problems. Using a special balloon, your child can treat glue ear and negative pressure independently.

Earache and negative pressure are often caused by a blockage in the Eustachian tube, for example due to a cold, flying or diving. This causes pain and hearing problems.

Please note: Otovent for children and adults is the same product; only the packaging and marketing may differ

How does it work?

Otovent is a medical device that can be used if you are unable to equalise the pressure yourself. For best results, follow the three steps below.
Before using it for the first time, stretch the Otovent balloon out slightly and inflate it once.

Install

Attach the balloon to the nose piece. Hold the round part of the nose piece firmly against one nostril. Press your index finger against the other nostril to block the airflow on that side.

Inflate

Take a deep breath, close your mouth and blow up the balloon gently but firmly until it is the size of a grapefruit (10–12 cm). Once the balloon is inflated, swallow 1 to 3 times.

Repeat

Repeat this process with the other nostril. The procedure is successful when you hear or feel a small ‘pop’ in your ear.

How can Otovent® help?

Otovent is a medication-free, non-surgical device for self-inflation. The balloons in the kit are specially designed to open the Eustachian tube under pressure when inflated through the nose. This process allows the fluid associated with glue ear to drain away safely. Based on clinical trials involving children diagnosed with mucous ear blockage, NICE recommends trying auto-inflation during the watch-and-wait or active observation period.

No. Otovent should not be used if your child has a cold or a stuffy nose.

Glue ear, also known as mucus*, is a condition in which fluid accumulates in the middle ear due to a blockage in the Eustachian tube. This often occurs after a cold or flying. Otovent is a medical device designed to gently restore this negative pressure in the ear to normal. A special balloon, inflated through the nose, clears this blockage and drains the fluid.

It may take a few tries before you get used to it and feel comfortable with how to use it and the technique involved. It is recommended that a parent tries the Otovent first and then asks the child how it feels. When used correctly, the user will hear sounds – clicks or crackles – in their ear.

Some patients may experience an unpleasant sensation in the ear during inflation. This strange feeling will diminish during the next inflation and is an indication that the treatment is working properly.
